Pipe bursting in Paterson

A lateral that has collapsed, flattened or sagged beyond what a liner can follow is replaced by pulling new HDPE through the path of the old pipe. In Paterson, pipe bursting does that from two small pits while the yard, the sidewalk and the street stay closed.

Breaking the old pipe from the inside

Pipe bursting replaces a buried pipe without excavating along it. A steel cable or rod string is threaded through the old lateral, and a conical bursting head, larger than the host pipe, is attached at the far end along with the new pipe. A hydraulic winch or a pneumatic hammer drives the head forward; it splits the old pipe outward into the surrounding soil and the new pipe follows into the space. The method handles vitrified clay, cast iron, concrete and Orangeburg, each of which fractures or tears when the head passes. Only ductile iron and steel resist it, and those are rare in laterals in this territory.

Pipe that must be replaced rather than lined

Lining depends on a host pipe that still has its round shape and its slope. A section of clay that has caved in, Orangeburg that has gone oval or flat, a pipe crushed under a settled retaining wall or a driveway, a long belly that holds water, or a lateral that is undersized for a house that has grown from one apartment to three all fail that test. Bursting removes the question by replacing the pipe along the same path. It is also the answer when a municipality's point-of-sale program will not accept a liner over a pipe with a collapsed section. The decision rests on the camera inspection, and the comparison between methods is set out at the CIPP method reference.

Pits, pulling and the new pipe

The job needs two openings: an insertion pit, typically near the house or a cleanout, and a receiving pit at the connection to the main or at the property line. Each is a few feet square, dug by hand or with a small excavator. The new pipe is high-density polyethylene, fused into a single continuous length with no joints to leak or shift, and sized to match or exceed the old line. The pull takes well under an hour for a residential lateral; the full day goes to the pits, the connections at each end, backfill and compaction. the verified bursting contractor serving Paterson is the verified installer covering Paterson and runs residential bursting jobs start to finish in one or two days.

Fill soils, high water and party walls

Ground conditions in Passaic County shape how a burst is planned. Dense clay and shale soils take more pulling force but hold the pit walls well. Fill along the rivers and marshes, and sandy ground near the shore with a high water table, require shored pits and sometimes dewatering, which is still far less than an open trench would need. Where a lateral passes under a party wall between two attached houses, the bursting head is kept well below the footing, and the crew confirms on camera that a neighbor's shared connection is not disturbed. In the hills to the west, a lateral running beneath a retaining wall can often be burst where a trench would risk the wall itself.

Permits, the right-of-way and utility marking

Because bursting requires pits, it usually touches more permits than lining. A municipal plumbing permit is standard; a pit in the sidewalk or street needs a road-opening permit; and a state highway frontage needs a DOT permit. Utilities are marked before any pit is dug, since gas, water and electric services often run near the lateral in old rowhouse neighborhoods. Lateral ownership differs by municipality, and the contractor confirms the rule for Paterson before quoting so you know whether the receiving pit is on your side or the town's.

What you have when the crew leaves

A jointless HDPE lateral with a service life measured in decades, a post-installation video confirming grade and connections, a written warranty, and a yard with two patched squares rather than a trench. Verified installers who provide that record are listed at the directory of verified installers. The first step is a camera inspection, and the estimate that follows it is free.

Questions we hear about pipe bursting

How is bursting different from lining?+

Lining builds a new pipe inside the old one and needs the old pipe to be round and on grade. Bursting breaks the old pipe apart and replaces it with new HDPE along the same path, so it works where lining cannot: collapses, flattened Orangeburg, deep bellies and undersized lines. Bursting needs two pits; lining needs a cleanout.

Does bursting work on Orangeburg and cast iron?+

Yes. Orangeburg tears easily, clay and concrete shatter, and cast iron is split by a bladed cutting head ahead of the expander. Ductile iron and steel are the exceptions, and they are rare in residential laterals in Passaic County.

Can the new line be larger than the old one?+

Usually by one pipe size, for example from four inches to six. The bursting head is sized to open the ground enough for the larger pipe. Upsizing is common when a single-family house has become multiple units and the original lateral is undersized.

Will bursting disturb my neighbor's shared lateral?+

The pre-job camera survey maps where any shared connection sits, and the pull is planned so that connection is reinstated and filmed afterward. The bursting head is kept below any party-wall footing. In attached housing this planning is part of every job, not an exception.

How do I get a quote?+

Call or send the form. A camera inspection establishes whether the line is a bursting candidate, how long it is, and where the pits would go, and the proposal follows with the video. Estimates are free; call now.
